Labuan Bajo is a coastal town on the western tip of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, facing the waters between Flores and Sumbawa. It serves as the main gateway to Komodo National Park and is also a center for travel across western Flores. The town sits beside a sheltered harbor surrounded by small islands, dry hills, and coastal landscapes. Its location gives Labuan Bajo a strong connection to both marine environments and the mainland of Flores. The waterfront, fishing activity, and busy harbor reflect its role as an important coastal community and transport center.

The cultural identity of Labuan Bajo is closely connected with the Manggarai people of western Flores. Traditional customs, local ceremonies, music, dance, and handwoven textiles remain important expressions of Manggarai culture. Nearby villages provide opportunities to see traditional houses and learn about local community practices. The area also has a strong maritime character, with fishing and boatbuilding forming part of coastal life. Traditional wooden boats remain a familiar sight around the harbor, while local markets and food stalls provide a more everyday view of life in the region.

Komodo National Park is the main natural attraction reached from Labuan Bajo and includes Komodo, Rinca, and Padar islands, along with surrounding marine areas. The park protects wild Komodo dragons as well as dry savanna, mangroves, coral reefs, and diverse marine species. Other nearby attractions include Batu Cermin Cave, where sunlight can reflect from the cave walls, and Rangko Cave, known for its enclosed saltwater pool. Boat trips from the harbor also reach smaller islands and beaches used for snorkeling, diving, and exploring coastal landscapes.

Seafood is an important part of dining in Labuan Bajo, with fresh fish and other marine products commonly available around the waterfront and local food areas. The town also provides access to foods associated with Flores and Manggarai cuisine, including dishes based on corn, rice, vegetables, and locally raised meat. One distinctive feature of the region is the close relationship between its land and sea environments: dry hills and savanna can be found close to coral-rich waters and small tropical islands. This combination gives Labuan Bajo a distinctive geographic and cultural setting within Indonesia.
